Types of Advertisements
The oldest and most common ad format seen online. Display or “banner ads” come in a variety of sizes and can be seen on websites, apps or social media in the form of text, images, flash, video, and audio. Advertisers typically measure the performance of these ads by analyzing metrics such as viewability and click-through-rate (CTR).
Advertisements that match the look, feel and user flow of a website or app. These ads can be camouflaged so well within a site that the user cannot tell the difference between the ad and the content.
An ad that plays within a streaming video whether its before, during or after the video. A publisher would typically need to host their own content on a video player to gain access to this type of ad format.
A video advertisement that can render without being linked to content. Also known as “outsream video”, these ads typically autoplay when an action takes place such as scrolling to a particular page or section of a website.
Above the Fold Ads (ATF)
The viewable space on a website when it first loads on your screen. It is a term taken from print media. The 'fold' used to mean the literal fold in a newspaper, but on a computer has come to mean the bottom of a user's screen before scrolling down the page. Ads placed ATF are more likely to be seen by users and therefore advertisers will pay more for these ad placements.
Typical ATF Placements:
Normally placed above or below the website header, this ad can range in size depending on the amount of space you would like to give your potential advertisers. The larger the ad the higher the potential CPM you will achieve.
Common Ad sizes include: 970x250, 970x90, 728x90
Top Right Sidebar:
Placed next to content on the top right side of the site, this ad typically takes on the shape of a square or vertical rectangle and can also vary in size and width.
Common Ad sizes include: 300x600, 300x250, 160x600, 120x600
Ad placed within the content right before the "fold" of the page. Generally, this advertisement is placed within content matching the width.
Common Ad sizes include: 728x90, 970x90, 300x250
An impactful way to increase your viewability is to integrate “sticky” ads on your website. These ads can be integrated on a page to follow the user as they scroll up or down your page. Typically these ads are placed in the right sidebar of the site and can range in size depending on the space provided.
